FAQ

  • Any survivor of Hurricane Helene is invited to submit poetry, prose, and images to be included in our anthology project. We are focusing on the communities in and around Western North Carolina (where the book will be officially launched and locally sold, with proceeds benefitting mutual aid projects in WNC), but you may submit your work regardless of where you live.

  • Doesn’t matter! ALL ARE WELCOME, NO PREVIOUS WRITING/ART EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. If you feel called to create something for this project, we’d love to publish you!

  • Email dithyrambler@dandelionscribes.com with your writing, photography, and/or artwork. Please include a short bio with your submission.

  • Dandelion Scribes is primarily a poetry publication, but for this project you can submit anything from poetry to short pieces of prose to journal entries or simple personal statements. We would also like to collect images, whether photography or artwork, to include in the print anthology. You can submit both words and images, or you can focus on one or the other.

For an example of what to submit, you can check out the Dandelion Scribes article that inspired our anthology project: https://dandelionscribes.com/publication/from-the-holler-to-the-sea-hurricane-helene-survivors-speak-out

  • There is no official limit to how much you can submit. We may have to make choices about what we can and can’t include if we receive a high volume of submissions, but for now you can submit as much work as you want.

  • No! Submissions are free!

  • You can write/create anything pertaining to your experience as a survivor of Helene & as an Appalachian living in our mountain lands. Some questions to consider that may be helpful in preparing your submission: What have you witnessed in the wake of this disaster? What has the impact been on your community? What mutual aid efforts have you observed/taken part in? What paths forward can you highlight or identify?

  • You will receive an email back from Dandelion Scribes within a few days letting you know we’ve received your submission.

In general, we don’t plan on rejecting any submissions from Helene survivors. This project is not a competition! The idea is to be as inclusive as possible, giving all affected folks a chance to share their stories.

No hate speech will be accepted, and we ask that you keep your submissions on topic to your experience as a survivor.

In the event we receive a high volume of submissions, we may have to make some selections about what can realistically be included, but in general you can assume just about anything you submit will be printed in the book!

  • Yes, you can! Let us know with your submission whether credit to a previous publisher should be noted.

  • Yes. You retain all rights to your work and can do whatever you want with it, before and after publication in the anthology. Be sure to check with any other publications about their guidelines. Some publications accept previously published work while some do not.

  • Please submit your work by June 6! Check back for any possible deadline extensions.

  • We are aiming for publication this coming fall, but we don’t have an exact date set yet. Updates will be posted here!

As of now, we are hopeful to have the final product ready by November 2025.

  • We won’t know the price of the final product until we have completed the manuscript design. We do have an active fundraiser via Kickstarter (posted at the top of this page), with the goal that all contributors may be able to receive a free copy of the anthology once it’s printed! Check back here for updates.

  • All proceeds will go toward mutual aid efforts in and around WNC, to be determined by Rednecks Rising.

  • We won’t be able to pay authors/contributors as the proceeds will go toward mutual aid efforts in and around WNC. However, we are hopeful that we can raise enough funds to offer all contributors a free copy of the anthology once it is published! Check back for updates.

  • Short answer — yes! We will be planning a book launch party for all authors and contributors to have a chance to read & present their work to the larger community. More information will be added here once we have an exact publication date.

  • For sure: the book will be sold locally in and around WNC, via the Dandelion Scribes online poetry shop, and through Rednecks Rising Media.

Possibly: the book might be available online through other major distributors. More on that soon!
