Laura Clift is a writer, artist, and traveler based in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee. Her life revolves around story– whether in writing books, painting scenes, working in the theatre, or venturing out to explore. After all, what could be more human than having a dream, creating a memory, and sharing a story?

Written for a Friend is much like a constellation– like individual stars light-years away from one another, only connected by an astronomer’s idea. This collection is five stories set across time and quite far apart. From the western coast of England, woods of Appalachia, to an old lighthouse in New England, long desert road in Nevada, and silver Loch of Scotland. These places and the stories they hold are connected by explorations of family, friendship, and grief. And a little magic, too. People can be like constellations as well, when we share stories. For a moment while reading, though we are individuals and very far apart, these stories will connect us like lines between stars.
Excerpt from a story: “The Year April Left”
It began the night after the burial. Lottie had fallen asleep looking towards the creek out the front window. When she woke up, the moon still high, April was perched beside her on the armchair. She’d lurched back so hard she fell out of the chair and slammed into the wall. He’d just chuckled at her clumsiness and winked. Before her parents had flipped on the hall lights to follow the noise, April had vanished. She had been twelve. He was sixteen, and always would be. ⚘
